Ama/ fakat / ancak /yalnız 'but'

The conjunctions ama / fakat/ ancak/ yalnız give the meaning of an opposition.

Examples

• Yorgunum ama mutluyum. (I am tired but happy.)
• Arkadaşım seni aradı fakat açmadın. (My friend called you, but you didn't answer.)
• Radyo açık ancak dinlemiyoruz. (The radio is on, but we are not listening to it.)

Ve / ile 'and'

The conjunction 've' or 'ile' is used to combine two or more words in a sentence.

Examples

• Türkçe ve / ile İngilizce konuşuyorum. (I speak Turkish and English.)
• Annem ve / ile kardeşim beni ziyaret edecek. (My mother and sister will visit me.)
• Makarna, patates ve ekmek almalısın. (You should buy a pasta, potato and bread.)

Çünkü 'because'

The conjunction 'çünkü' is used in the cause and effect sentences.

Examples

• Gelemedim çünkü hastaydım. (I couldn't come because I was ill.)
• Evi almadık çünkü pahalıydı. (We didn't buy the house because it was expensive.)
• Yemek yemediler çünkü aç değillerdi. (They didn't eat because they were not hungry.)

De 'and, but, too'

The conjunction 'de' can be used in different meanings as and, too or but. 'De' is written separately from the word that is used before it.

Examples

• Gidelim dedi, ben de onu dinledim. (He said 'let's go', and I listened him.)
• Ben geldim de, onlar gelecek mi bilmiyorum. (I arrived, but I don't know if they will come.)
• Bugün de kar yağacakmış. (Today will be rainy too.)

Ya da / veya 'or'

The conjunction 'ya da ' or 'veya' is used to show that there is a choice of two alternatives.

Examples

• Hamburger veya / ya da pizza yiyebilirim. (I can eat hamburger or pizza.)
• Yüzmek veya koşmak benim için fark etmez. (Swimming or running, it doesn't matter for me.)

Bu yüzden 'so / because of this'

The conjunction 'bu yüzden' is used to indicate the result in a sentence.

Examples

• Çok çalışmadı, bu yüzden sınavı geçemedi. (He didn't work hard, so he couldn't pass the exam.)
• Çok açım, bu yüzden önce yemek yiyeceğim. (I am very hungry, so I will eat something first.)
• Dün çok soğuktu, bu yüzden hasta oldu. (It was very cold yesterday, so she got cold.)

...de....de 'both...and'

The conjunction '...de ... de' or 'hem... hem' is used to show two related elements in a sentence.

• Bugün hem Ali hem Ayşe gelecek. (Both Ali and Ayşe will come tonight.)
• Üzüm de şeftali de sevdiğim meyveler. (Both grape and peach are my favourite fruits.)
