Days of the week, months and seasons in Estonian

So far you have learned the numbers and how to tell the time. Now it's time to find out the names of the months, seasons and days of the week. After this lesson you will be able to write a complete date!

Days of the week

The names of the days are written with a small letter.

 Notice that 'reede' (friday) is the only one that doesn't have the word 'päev' (day) in it.

For saying WHEN something happened, -AL must be added to the end of the word (equivalent to ON Monday in English). 

• Ma lähen poodi teisipäeval - I am going to the shop on Tuesday.
• Ta sündis neljapäeval - She was born on Thursday
• Täna on reede - Today is Friday

The ​12 months in Estonian

Months are also written with a small letter.

For saying IN which month something happened, the word has to be declined in the inessive case. Usually it means adding -IS or -S (if the last letter of the month is i) to the end of the word.

Examples

• Ma lähen kooli septembris - I am going to the school in September
• Praegu on oktoober - Now it's October
• Ta sünnipäev on mais - Her birthday is in May
• Kas sa lähed augustis reisile? Will you go travelling in August?

Seasons of the year

For saying WHEN something happened -EL must be added to the name of the season.

Kevadel läheb ilm soojemaks - The weather gets warmer in spring.

Ma lähen suvel randa - In the summer I will go to the beach.

Halloween on sügisel - Halloween is in autumn.

Talvel tuleb meile külla jõuluvana - Santa will visit us in winter.

Asking about the date and day in Estonian

Writing the dates in Estonian is easy: 8. november

However reading this is more difficult because you have to know the ordinal numbers: kaheksas november (instead of kaheksa)

Example dialogue

Marta: Mis kuupäev täna on? --- What's the date today?

Laura: Täna on 12. mai --- Today is 12th May.

Marta: Aga mis päev? --- But what day is it?

Laura: Täna on kolmapäev. --- It's Wednesday.

Marta: Mis kuus sa sündinud oled? --- In which month were you born?

Laura: Ma sündisin aprillis --- I was born in April.

Marta: Ja kas kevad on su lemmikaastaaeg? --- And is sping your favourite season?

Laura: Ei, mu lemmik on suvi. --- No, my favourite is summer.
