In German, as in English, you can use "lieben" (to love) and "mögen" (to like) for persons, things and actions. But you should be careful of the context in which you use these. For example while it is common in English to refer to family members with "I love you" this use is not practiced in German. For family members you usually use "Ich habe dich lieb" (similar to "I hold you dear"), since "Ich liebe dich" mostly refers to romantic love.
Here are a few expression to signal affection in German:
German phrase | Translation | Use |
---|---|---|
Ich liebe dich | I love you | Romantic love mostly Sometimes also for things or actions (as in "Ich liebe Pizza" - I love Pizza) |
Ich habe dich lieb | I hold you dear | Family members / really close persons |
Ich mag dich / das | I like you / that | For friends, things and actions |
Du / Das gefällt mir | You / this pleases me (hard to translate phrase) | Usually if you like someone's style or when you do something for the first time |
