Vietnamese keyboard and how to write accents

Good news for you, learning Vietnamese might not be as challenging as you expected. You know why? Because Vietnam is one of the few Asian languages that does not have special characters like Mandarine, Japanese or Korean! It uses the same Latin alphabet, also known as Roman alphabet, the most common writing system in the world. That is due to the French colonisation in the 19th/20th century. Therefore, you only need to know how to use the different accent marks on the letters.

How to use a Vietnamese keyboard online

In order to properly wr ite in Vietnamese, you need to be able to use the accent marks that exist in the Vietnamese language. There are many online/virtual keyboards that show you the accent marks on screen and you can just continue to write on you own keyboard. If you choose one of the following virtual keyboards, you can continue using the keyboard on your device but it will have the accent marks.

How to download a Vietnamese keyboard tool

Or how to change the keyboard directly on your device

Another way to use the Vietnamese keyboard is to change the keyboard on your operating system (iOs or Windows). The only disadvantage then is that you don't see what key stands for which. 

Windows

1. Press Windows Key + X from your keyboard

2. The Windows 8 Tools Menu will appear on the screen

3. Select Control Panel from the menu

4. Click Change input methods under clock, languages, region heading or click to switch to the small icons view under category view and select language

5. You are in the language preferences screen; from there select Add a language to include a new language of your choice

6. Choose Vietnamese to add to queue and hit the Add tab

7. Select the new language and click the Move up button in order to make the selected language as your primary language.

8. Restart your Windows 8 system, to effect the changes

Apple

1. Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences
2. Click Keyboard
3. Click the Input Sources tab
4. Click the "+" button to search for languages to add.
5. heck the box for each input source you want to use. You can add multiple input sources.

6. Check the "Show Input menu in menu bar" box. A flag icon representing the current input will appear in the menu bar.

7. Click the flag to change input languages. You'll be able to quickly select from any of the input sources you've checked.

8. Use keyboard shortcuts to change between languages.

   • Command + Space - Switch to previous input language

   • Command + Option + Space - Switch to next input language
