Letters of the Spanish alphabet
Spanish alphabet is separated into vowels and consonants.
Vowels in Spanish
A, E, O, I, U
Strong vowels are A, E, O. Weak are I and U.
Here it comes pronunciation lesson number 1:
- When we have 2 strong vowels one next to the other in a word, then we pronounce 2 individual syllables. Example: paseo (pa-se-o) has 3 syllables.
- If we have a strong and a weak vowel one next to the other or two weak ones one next to the other, then we pronounce 1 single syllable. Example: juicio (jui - cio) has 2 syllables.
Consonants in Spanish
B, C, Ch, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, Ll, M, N, Ñ, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z
Letters unique to the Spanish alphabet
They lack in other writing systems and have a specific pronunciation. Ch is similar to the English letter combination "ch" considering pronunciation. While Ll and Ñ have the function to soften the following vowel.
