There are different types of preposition in the German language.
For example:
Das Haus steht neben der Kirche. - The house stands next to the church (locative)
Vor dem Spiel gehen wir etwas essen. - Before the game we are going to eat something (temporal)
Mit meiner besten Freundin habe ich Spaß. - I have fun with my best friend (modal)
Trotz des Regens habe ich gute Laune. - Despite the rain I am in a good mood (causal)

Some prepositions in the German language require one of the four German cases. Other prepositions can come along in two cases (two-way-prepositions)
For example:
Ich brauche Zucker für den Kaffee. - I need sugar for the coffee (accusative)
Er kommt aus der Schule. - He comes from school (dative)
Während des Morgens ist es kalt. - It's cold during the morning. (genitive)
Prepositions are sometimes directly set with a verb. As always the prepositional object's case depent on the preposition itself.
For example:
Denkst du an sie? - Are you thinking of her? (An wen/was denkst du?)
Ich arbeite an der Hausarbeit. - I'm working on the assignment (An wem arbeite ich?)
