Turkish reflexive pronouns

 The Turkish reflexive pronoun 'Kendi' (self/own) is used to emphasize who has done the action and used instead of the regular Turkish personal pronouns.

When to use the reflexive pronouns ?

The  reflexive pronoun 'kendi' is used to show:

1.  an emphasis
2. a possession
3. a subject

1. To show an emphasis

The reflexive pronouns can be used to show an emphasis. (Ben kendim, I myself...)

Examples

• Bu ödevleri (sen) kendin bitirdin. (You finished these homeworks yourself.)
• Keki (ben) kendim yaptım. (I made a cake myself.)
• (O) kendisi için üzülüyordu. ( She was feeling sorry for herself.)

2. To show a possession

The pronoun 'kendi' is used to express a possession as an adjective. In this case, the person agrees with the thing which is owned.

Examples

• Bu benim kendi arabam. (This is my own car.)
• Kendi havlunu kullanmalısın. (You should use your own towel.)
• Bu senin kendi evin. (This is your own house.)

3. To show a subject

The Turkish personal pronouns are used as a subject of a sentence. On the other hand, the reflexive personal pronoun 'kendi' can be used to emphasize the subject of the sentence. The reflexive personal pronoun can be used with the personal pronouns.
