Sign up for freeIn the following lessons we will talk about one of the most important sentence elements, the nouns = imenice. Together with verbs they are the base of a sentence. In general nouns are describing living creatures, plants, terms or any other object. In Croatian as in other Slavic languages they don't come along with articles. Additionally, nouns belong to the declinable part of the speech.
What are you going to learn?
There are three different genders in Croatian language. The nouns can have:
muški rod; grad (city) = masculine gender
ženski rod; kuća (house) = feminine gender
srednji rod; slovo (letter) = neuter gender

As in many other languages, Croatian language has grammatical numbers singular and plural. There are different rules depending on gender they are reffering to. Also there are many exceptions in pluralisation of masculine nouns.
grad - gradovi = city - cities
kuća - kuće = house - houses
slovo - slova = letter - letters
