Beri (since/for)
The postposition 'beri' is used as the synonym for the prepositions 'since' and 'for' in English. When 'beri' is used in the meaning of 'for' it indicates the time period which happened before the moment that is talked about.
'Beri' and 'bu yana' have the same meaning when they are used in the meaning 'since.'
Examples
- Dünden beri / bu yana bekliyorum. (I am waiting since yesterday.)
- Cumadan beri / bu yana görüşmedik. (We didn't meet since Friday.)
- Yıllardan beri seyahat etmiyor. (She didn't travel for years.)
Önce (before)
The postposition 'önce' has the meaning earlier/before than something or somebody.
Examples
- Onlar benden önce dışarı çıktılar. (They went out before me.)
- Saat sekizden önce burada olmalısın. (You should be here before eight o'clock.)
Sonra (after)
The postposition 'sonra' has the meaning after/later than something or somebody.
Examples
- Sinemadan sonra eve gittim. (After the cinema, ı went home.)
- Arkadaşımdan sonra sıra bende olacak. (After my friend, it will be my turn.)
Başka (other than)
The postposition 'başka' has the meaning 'apart from' or 'other than'.
Examples
- Bundan başka bir şeye ihtiyacın var mı? (Do you need anything other than this?)
- Odada Ahmet'ten başka kimse yoktu. (Apart from Ahmet, the room was empty.)
Dolayı (because of)
The postposition 'dolayı' is used to show cause and effect relationships and it has the same meaning as 'because of'.
Examples
- Okuldan dolayı alışverişe gitmedik. (We didn't go to shopping because of the school.)
- Yağmurdan dolayı evdeyim. (I am at home because of the rain.)
