There are several distinctive traits for the Italian verbs conjugations:
Careful! This peculiarities aren't steady for every mood and every tense: e.g. the first person of the present indicative has not a tematic vowel:
i.e.: cant-o (I sing), not cant-ao; prend-o (I take), not prend-eo.

To conjugate regular verbs you must essentially add the verb ending (according to the specific tense and mood) to the root of the verb, which stays unchanged.
Nevertheless, only the simple tenses follow this rule: as we know, the compound tenses are formed with the auxiliary verbs (essere o avere) and the past participle of the specific verb.
