The German subconjunctions
The subconjunctions connect the main clause to the conjunctional clause. The following table lists all the important German subconjunctions

Building of German conjunctional clauses
As mentioned above, a conjunctional clause is always initiated by a subconjunction. After that the subject and object of the sentence follow. In German the conjugated form of the verb here always stands at the very end of the sentence!
Conjunction + Subject + Object + conjugated Verb
Examples for sentences with a conjunctional clause
- Sie spricht gut Spanisch, weil sie ein Semester in Spanien studiert hat. (She speaks Spanish well, because she studied a semester in Spain)
- Laura isst gerne italienisch, wohingegen Maria lieber asiatisch isst. (Laura likes to eat Italian food, whereas Maria prefers Asian food)
- Gestern war es sehr kalt, trotzdem sind wir Fußball spielen gegangen. (Yesterday it was very cold, despite that we went to play football)
- Obwohl er viel gelernt hat, hat der die Prüfung nicht bestanden. (Despite having learned a lot, he didn't pass the exam)
- Sobald ich genaueres weiß, sage ich dir bescheid. (As soon as I know more, I will let you know)
- Wir gehen einen Kaffee trinken, nachdem wir einkaufen waren. (We will go to have a coffee, after we were shopping)
