Adverbs of place and direction in Turkish

The adverbs of place or direction show the place where the action of a verb is directed to.

General rules

1. Adverbs of place can be found as an answer to the question ''where?'' (nereye?).
2. Adverbs of place are used without suffixes.
3. If the adverbs of place get any suffix then they become a noun.

Position of adverbs of place

Adverbs of place can be found as an answer to the question ''where?'' (nereye?).

Example dialogues:

• Nereye gitmeliyim? (Where should I go?)
• İçeri gitmeli miyim? (Should I go inside?)
• Evet, içeri gitmelisin. (Yes, you should go inside.)

• Nereye hareket ettiler? (Where did they move?)
• Çiftliğe doğru mu hareket ettiler? (Did they move towards the farm?)
• Evet, çiftliğe doğru hareket ettiler. (Yes, they moved towards the farm.)

• Kedileri dışarı çıkardı. (He took the cats outside.)
• Geri gelecek misin? (Will you turn back?)
• Ayşe ileri eğildi. (Ayşe leaned forward.)

How to use the adverbs of place

 Adverbs of place are used without suffixes.  When adverbs of place get a suffix then they become a noun.

Examples

• İçeri gel. (Come inside.) 
• İçeriye gel. (Come inside.)
• İçerisi çok sıcak. (It's too hot inside.) 

​Note: The dative (-e), locative (-de) or ablative (-den) suffixes can be used to express location in or movement from.

• İçeriye gel. (Come inside.)
• İçeride bekliyorum. (I am waiting inside.)
• İçeriden geliyorum. (I am coming from inside.)
