Definition and usage of the condizionale presente

The condizionale presente is used to:

make polite requests or offers (condizionale di cortesia)
make a wish or express desires (condizionale ottativo)
give advice and make suggestions
express or report something you are not sure about (condizionale di dissociazione)
express hypothesis in the hypothetical period (periodo ipotetico della possibilità)

Condizionale di cortesia	Potresti spegnere la TV, per favore? Gradireste del caffè?	Could you please turn the TV off? Would you like some coffee?
Condizionale ottativo	Sarebbe bello andare al mare questa domenica Luca vorrebbe andare in Australia	It would be nice to go to the seaside on Sunday Luca would like to go to Australia

The condizionale presente can be used both in main clauses and in subordinate clauses.
E.g. Luca vorrebbe un bicchiere d'acqua (Luca would like a glass of water) - main clause
Penso che dovresti chiederle scusa (I think you should apologise to her) - subordinate clause

The condizionale presente is formed by adding certain endings to the root of the verb.

Conjugation of regular verbs

Regular verbs add different endings based on the conjugation they belong to.

Verbs that belong to the -are conjugation

These verbs add the endings -erei, -eresti, -erebbe, -eremmo, -ereste, -erebbero to the root of the verb.

Example amare (to love)
